Seeds of Change

Working in collaboration with two other students, creating a new design for the green space which acts as a doorway to campus, including aspects of sculpture, seating, and social engagement. Our theme for this project was home and journeys, reflecting the distance travelled by both domestic and international students, as well as the local population using the doorway to campus as a route to the park. Sustainability was an important consideration; we incorporated elements to attract pollinators and used eco-friendly materials in our construction.

We worked alongside a landscape architecture organisation planning a long-term redesign of the green spaces on campus, so our plans had to be sensitive to the wider goals. We held information gathering sessions to share our ideas with students, staff and locals, encouraging co-creation through voting and discussion, as well as including the words of participants in the final design.

As a socially engaged artist, my main focus was connection and sustainability. Prior to the engagement activity, I handmade paper using old course materials and native wildflower seeds. Participants used this paper to write their thoughts, and were then encouraged to plant these in the city to create their own small patch of home.
